diversiCHOICE Card 1

Your parents are uncomfortable around people who are not like them. They want to meet your new friend of a difference economic class, but you’re a little afraid. What might you do?

  1. Don’t give your parents the opportunity to try to end your friendship. Tell your parents that your friend is busy.
  2. Take a risk and invite him or her. If it becomes an embarrassing situation, you can deal with it then.
  3. Inform both parties of the situation and then make a decision.
  4. The safest approach is to choose a new friend that your parents will like.

You are invited over to a friend’s home for a celebration meal. There are many foods on the table that you do not recognize. What do you do?

  1. Tell your friend privately you are upset that he or she would do this to you.
  2. Tell your friend’s parents a "white lie”: You are a vegetarian. Then apologize for not being able to eat the foods they serve.
  3. Explain your concern about eating foods you don’t recognize and offer to eat small amounts.
  4. Very simple, act like you have an upset stomach and drink water only. You can eat when you get home.
